Wheel Size 'chops

With all the talk about wheel sizes going on, I thought I would do some 'chops to illustrate the differences (scaled by percentage for accurate sizes):

Original Concept:

18 fr/rr (stock rear tire dia.):

18 fr/rr (resized rear tire dia.):

18 fr/rr (resized rear quarter panel to shrink wheel opening):

20 fr/rr (resized rear quarter panel to shrink wheel opening):

Personally, I like the staggered wheels of the concept (makes the rear quarter look less "thick" or "heavy"), but understand the real-world implications. The 20 fr/rr with resized quarter panel doesn't look too bad, IMHO. But, the 18s just look too small for a modern car for my taste, but should be fine for the V6s.

Pretty good.

It's somewhat hard to believe that an 18 inch wheel would ever be considered "too small" but your analysis certainly shows the difference. Your resizing of the fenderwells is a nice addition.

I'll be curious to see what the autocrossers and road racers will be using. Is there ever going to come a time when a wheel is considered "too big?' Probably not until it's 26 inches in diameter, made from carbon fiber, with treaded rubber injection molded onto the wheel, it seems.

I was talking more for aesthetics. Any sort of racing would use the most efficient, not the best looking. But on the street, that 0.0001 wouldn't be missed, yet the more aggressive looking wheel/tire combo would be appreciated.

I think 18" - 20" should be the range offered on the Camaro. Make 20" available on V6 cars as a stand alone option

i agree.. 17" would be way too small... 18" should be the base wheel size, with up to 20" available..

why did i just repeat what you said?

The 3rd one down with a 1" drop would look pretty good.

I like the third one w/ the resized tired dia. If you lower it would even that gap and help fill up the wheel well a bit..

According to Bob Lutz, the production car should probably have 19 or 20 inch wheels. He said this in January '06, so things may have changed, but I don't think 18s look good.

I like the 18's without re-sized openings. To me, it looks cool, but hints that there's more performance to be had with a simple wheel/tire change.

Besides, then GM could come out with bad-*** 20" combos and charge us to buy them.
