What Mustang guys think of the Camaro...

I was browsing through some Mustang forums to see what they think of the 5th gen now that specs have been released. Here's what I found:

BASE MODEL.

Ford needs to pony up (no pun intended) and drop that boat anchor for what it is. If your only gonna give us 215 hp, give it to us from a 3.0L DOHC I6.

Props to Chevy, I hope they sell really well so Ford's forced to do something about it.

Doesn't sound like they're too happy.

Ah... the Horsepower Wars are back! This is a good thing for everyone, Ford, GM, Chrysler... Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger fans alike. Competition is what shakes up the folks in Detroit and gets the creative minds flowing... "How can we beat the other guys?"

Good times are just around the corner!

Did anybody else notice that Ford trotted out the upgraded 2010 Mustang at some race track yesterday? Of course it still had a lot of cammo on it.
There's an article on it at www.thecarconnection.com.

AND, Chrysler showed it's drag version of the Challenger yesterday.

Notice how the Camaro news buried the other guys' news.

Replies are about expected. Most of them are in shock and especially over how much power the v6 will have. Chevy doesn't play around when it comes to engines and the GT has been getting embarrassed by the LT1/LS1 and during some brief years (96-98) even had the 3.8L v6 cars right alongside their doors making them sweat. I'd imagine Ford guys are getting very tired of that.

We know something more serious is coming from Ford as far as engines go for the GT, but they can't wait till after the 2011 model year to get them out.

And the bar has definitely been raised for the v6 car. Even the 3.5L/3.7L duratec won't cut it now in the mustang unless it's an updated DI version. Imo, putting the 300hp DI 3.6L in the camaro was the knockout punch. That hurt a lot more than the 422hp LS3 which is just icing on the cake.

probably won't happen vs the 05+ GT's given the weight and tq difference (a difference of 250lbs and 50lb-ft of tq), but it should be quick enough to seriously challenge the pre-04 GT's.

Just watch out for that 3400lb 400hp Mustang coming out. If Ford comes out with a car that handles like my Bullitt with close to 400hp and under 3500lbs, it will make things very interesting on the streets.

I'm hoping for around or under 3,6XXlbs with 400 horses, 6spd, and IRS. Under 3,500lbs might be a bit optimistic. We'll know this November for sure.

I'll believe this sub 3500 lb., 400 HP Mustang when I see it. I don't think Ford can pull it off, not without seriously compromising the car's "user-friendliness".

The 3.5/3.7L V6 Mustang should be as quick, or quicker than the 300hp V6 Camaro. It will weigh 300-400lbs less.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves kiddies.

It sounds a bit optimistic to think it will even be under 3800lbs. I don't think GM would have intentionally made the Camaro as heavy as it is. So I bet it will be similar weight to the Camaro. Lightweight materials cost money!!

Competetion is a good thing... it brings out the best and weeds out the weak.

All this talk about Mustang being 400 lbs lighter... we'll see. They have to downsize the car or sacrifice structural rigidity/passenger safety

Seeing the pics of the mule from this weekend at Road America... they didnt downsize it significantly.....

Everyone who has followed the Camaro, knows that the Zeta platform that it is riding on (semi-luxury sedan platform) is significantly heavy.

The Mustang platform is dedicated to the Mustang, thus, it does not have the same problems.

Remember that the GT500, which is beefed up significantly, to easily handle the 500/540hp is 3920lbs............... and everyone called it a pig.

The auto SS weighs about 3920. Hmmmm..........

I guess we will see. The 2010 Mustang is not supposed to get any smaller, it is just supposed to "look" smaller. It is also supposed to lose about 100lbs. Time will tell.
