A beautiful thing!

Make it right with 'em also Boss for having to take the time to bring their cars in, even if the shaft hasn't broken. GM and the dealers can win BIG brownie points with a customer by treating them better than well when they come in for warranty work like this.

No Neons for rental cars when they bring in their spiffy new Camaro either.

Yes...
They gave me a Neon for a rental when I took my SS in for warranty work way back in 2001.

A Neon...

+1 for the truth.

the car doesnt even make any torque that high. prolly trying to do a fake-*** burnout.

5000 rpm launch on street tires should induce nothing but tire smoke, which you wouldn't *think* would be that hard on a tranny output shaft....but I'll admit that its pure speculation on my part.

Gotta be a manufacturing issue Bob.

The example I saw a picture of was cleanly sheared.

Shear failures can be likened to a yielding failure, which points to either a material issue (the wrong material being used) or a bad heat treatment of the parts.

-1 for irrelevant.

The tranny output shaft should be able to take that without shearing in half.

The circumstantial evidence certainly does point in that direction, and it would seem to make a lot of sense.

In the 2001 racing season, I had a thing for breaking input shafts....

...but this was NOT a manufacturing issue. Rather, it they were stressed and bent (notice the twists) over time (short though it may have been) do to a relatively weak design combined with very....uh.....aggressive driving, pushing them beyond their capability. I broke one more later in the year, for a total of 5 between July and November. Three of them broke on the 3/4 shift, 2 on the 2/3 shift. Two breaks caused me to lose NMRA class races. It was rather frustrating!

Tremec sent me 5 new ones on the condition that I would send them my broken ones so that they could examine them. Then in 2002, they sponsored my car.

I have to wonder, what kind of tires were on the cars with broken input shafts? Did any get towed in wearing slicks on the back?

Sounds like a dealer issue. AFAIK, they aren't allowed to rent you anything non-GM.
