To further put the Cobalt SS's time in perspective, I'm pretty sure the Cobalt SS holds the fastest production FWD time ever. It's a fast little car.
And, to reiterate, both cars (Camaro and Cobalt) are nearly as fast around the track as a C5 Z06, a car most would agree has world-class handling, braking, and acceleration. Both cars are faster than a regular C5, which is no slouch in those three departments.

Doug Houlihan, GM's chief engineer for global rear-wheel-drive vehicles is quoted that a Camaro SS ran the Nürburgring in 8:20.
Other cars that have done it in the same time:
The E36-generation BMW M3 in 1999
The Porsche 911 GT3 (993 generation) in 1999
he Audi RS6 in 2001
For comparison, the '09 Corvette ZR1 did it in 7:26.

Is this with the new flying start that they did with the ZR1 or from a dig like they had done in the past (sorry if this is in the article, didn't take the time to read the whole thing)? Kinda hard to compare it to the C5 Z06 and other vehicles from that past that were done from a dig if there was a running start. There was a bunch of controversy with this when the times came out for the GTR.

That's a good solid time at 8:20. We know how GM runs their cars at the Ring, in production trim down to the tires. It would have raised some eyebrows if the car would have broken 8 min. And I agree the Cobalt SS ran a very good time.
This Camaro is going to be a very capable and quick street car and very potent for 99.9% of buyers but it's racing heritage has been compromised a bit to make it a better street car. The laws of physics can't be broken and the curb weight and power to weight ratio although good will always be this cars Achillies heel when it's taken to a track.

The timed lap was run with a rolling start, a departure from our previous practice of standing starts. This is more aligned with current industry practice.

From the ZR1 Run (6/27/08):
So I'm assuming this run in the Camaro was a running start, while the old run in the C5 Z06 was standing start, hardly comparable. What about the other cars listed as being comparable to the Camaro? Were they running or standing starts? It's just nearly impossible to compare numbers from the Ring.

Yea, The ring is just like a dyno, a tool for tuning...to many variables and bull**** flying around.
Don't care what anyone says a C5 Z06 would destroy this car

Camaro versus Cobalt has essentially become a driver's battle on a road course. A storied V8 nameplate with a history rooted in decades of race history has become a driver's battle with a four cylinder, front wheel drive economy car.

This would be a departure from present. 3rd and 4th gens are handling the Cobalts quite nicely right now (as are the '05+ Mustangs). I'll let you guys do the rest of the math. Ouch. Not good at all.

I agree though.And I don't know where the two second difference at 8:20 came from since the C5 Z06 did it in 7:56 with Dave Hill driving. That is 24 seconds not 2. The C6 Z51 is also sub 8's per GM. The only Chevy within 2s is the Cobalt SS turbo @ 8:22.
The new Camaro SS cannot keep up with a C5 Z06 pretty much in any performance contest.
