I don't know about that - the '69 is pretty iconic; also, with all the marketing material I'm sure the dealerships have received and with so many comparing it to a 1969 model year, you would have hoped he would have picked that up. Even with minimal "brainwashing" , my wife can identify a 1969 from others.

Im sorry but I dont see how any of you can argue this. First of all and in fact, this guy likes Camaros but didnt know what year it was. Lots of people like old cars and Camaros and cant point out the year right away. We were all young at one time in our passion too, there was a time when everyone of you looked at a first gen and didnt know the year.

Yeah, when I was ten.

Again, the 1969 Camaro is pretty iconic; not just among Camaros, but among all cars.

Yes when you were ten. For the salesman when he was his current age. There are a ton of iconic cars. It still doesnt mean everyone can pick out a year right away, like this salesman for instance.

I don't know how to tell the different 1st-gen years apart, although this thread has given me some hints.

I'm not a huge fan of 1st gens, so I've never bothered to learn. I like all Camaros, but I'm most enthusiastic about 4th gens and 5th gens. Of the older ones, 2nd gens are my favorite, but I don't know how to tell the various model years apart for those either.

The easy stuff is this...
1967-only year w/ the flip out side windows by the A-pilar

1968-same body as the '67, but w/out the flip out windows, and '68s have the blinkers on the side fenders.

1969-slightly different body, biggest obvious change is the wheel wells are squared off at the tops

I guess what I should have also said originally is the sales person was looking at my car from the front. I would think out of all the first 3 years, from the front the 69 is the easiest to identify. Not to mention, in my opinion, the 2010 reminds me of the 69 looking at it head on. Oh, and they sold the IOM one that I saw and now have a Aqua Blue one, guess I might have to make another trip there to see it.

If there were a "ton" of iconic cars, they wouldn't stand out so much and therefore not necessarily be iconic. The 1964 Mustang, for example, is an icon in the automotive world and in American culture. The 1969 Camaro is definitely iconic in the Camaro world - its looks stand apart from the rest of the 1st generation and is the last of that generation.

Over the years, I'd say there have been at least a couple dozen iconic cars. You seem to be limiting yourself to classic pony cars (in which case, I'd suggest you're foolish not to mention the Cuda or the Challenger), but I'd argue that there are tons of iconic cars outside that realm. Newer pony cars for sure: the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen Camaros are all iconic IMO. Mustangs didn't do much for me in the '70s, but the original Fox body is iconic for sure, as is the '99 "edge" and the '05 too.

Outside of pony cars, I'd suggest that almost any Corvette could be considered iconic, but I'll make special mention of the '63 split window coupe. Viper is iconic. Chevelle is too.

Now I'm going to go outside of performance cars, and away from American cars too. The original Volkswagen Beetle is iconic, as is the New Beetle. The Mini Cooper is iconic (again, old and new). The BMW 3-series is iconic. The Lamborghini Countach is iconic. The Jaguar E-Type. The

The gull-wing Mercedes SL is iconic. I think the Buick Eight is iconic. The '32 Ford Deuce Coupe is iconic. The Model T is iconic.

I could go on, but I think I've made my point.

Good information, although I'd argue the slightly different body part (and be splitting hairs). Yes the dash, wheel openings/fenders, rear panel and grill are different. However the hood, doors (68-69), roof and rear deck are interchangeable.

I really throw folks off with my two 67s with one being an RS. Many think they're different years. I've even been asked if the RS is a '66 model. (Ok, technically it was built in 1966, but that's seriously splitting hairs.)

Twice in the past week I've had people tell me about camaros outside the camaro timeline. One swore up and down that his father owned a "63 camaro" that was going to be given to him, until he crashed it into the garage when he was 10(after showing him the three first gen years, we came to the conclusion it was a '69) and another claimed a car in a movie or something was a '65 camaro, which I scolded them both on the proper years and generations of the various camaro models.

There are a ton of iconic cars. Im not seeing your argument. The salesman was an enthusiest who didnt know the exact year of the car. Im not sure what you are arguing about.
