Chevrolet Performance Cars Rev Up the 2012 SEMA Show

Hot Wheels® ’67 Camaro concept and personalized cars for Tony Stewart, Guy Fieri spotlighted at annual automotive aftermarket extravaganza

LAS VEGAS – With models including the Camaro ZL1, Camaro SS with track-ready 1LE package and the Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition, 2013 is shaping up to landmark year for performance at Chevrolet.

Stylized versions of Chevy’s hottest performers – including a Camaro and Corvette for celebrity enthusiasts – as well as a life-size Hot Wheels® concept that mixes vintage Camaro style with a modern, emissions-compliant powertrain, take center stage at the SEMA Show this week. They reflect popular personalization trends and performance upgrades that many customers apply to their new Chevys, blending Chevrolet accessories and aftermarket components.

“Chevrolet’s performance cars have always been among the most personalized vehicles in the industry and it’s rare to find a Camaro or Corvette that hasn’t been enhanced by its owner,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles & Motorsports. “We celebrate that passion and creativity at the SEMA Show and our concepts are designed to inspire the high-performance dreams of enthusiastic customers.”

A Camaro ZL1 for NASCAR star Tony Stewart and a Corvette 427 Convertible for celebrity chef Guy Fieri exemplify the personalization possibilities that complement the performance capability of the vehicles. Each features styling enhancement reflective of the personality behind the wheel.

The Chevrolet Performance 1967 Camaro Hot Wheels® concept is a full-scale interpretation of the very first Hot Wheels Camaro, which was part of the first set of 1:64-scale toy cars issued in 1968. Along with mimicking the styling cues of the original – including its dazzling Spectraflame paint – this concept introduces a new LS3 E-ROD Connect and Cruise Powertrain System (part number CPSLS3EROD4L65E).

“Chevrolet Performance pioneered the industry with E-ROD emissions-compliant crate engines a few years ago and we did it again last year with the Connect and Cruise crate powertrains, which combine the crate engine, electronically controlled transmissions and the controller for them in a convenient and economical package,” said Campbell. “We’ve now combined those two great ideas with the LS3 E-ROD Connect and Cruise crate powertrain, delivering convenience with a CARB EO number – making the kit legal for installation in more than 20 million pre-OBD II vehicles in California.”

Additional performance concept and show vehicles on display include:

2013 Camaro Hot Wheels® Edition

Camaro ZL1 Touring Convertible concept

Camaro Performance V-8 concept

Camaro Performance V-6 concept.

Along with the concept vehicles, the Shop Talk garage experience demonstrates new Camaro ZL1- and 1LE-based upgrade kits, along with exterior and interior enhancements, with installation demonstrations performed on a Camaro SS. The parts are detailed in the 2013 edition of the Chevrolet Performance catalog, which also debuts at the SEMA Show.

Tony Stewart’s Camaro ZL1

Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champ Tony Stewart enjoys driving on the street as well as track and his sinister-looking Camaro ZL1 reflects the personality of a man nicknamed Smoke.

Stewart visited the GM Design Center, in Warren, Mich., to work with Chevrolet Design Manager Dave Ross to imbue his personality and tastes on the supercharged sports car. The collaboration delivered a custom gray metallic exterior accented with tribal and Smoke graphics in flat red and silver pinstripes. The headlamp lenses were tinted and feature red halo lighting; and this personalized performer rolls on custom wheels with a Piano Black finish and red accents.

Inside, Stewart’s ZL1 feature Jet Black leather seats with suede inserts and scarlet accent stitching, as well as:

Embroidered Tony Stewart signatures on the seats

Suede leather door panel inserts and instrument panel wrapping with laser-etched details

Jet Black leather door armrests with French stitching and white piping

Jet Black suede leather-wrapped steering wheel with scarlet accent stitching

Piano Black trim plates and gauge cluster bezel.

The heart of the car is the supercharged 6.2L LSA engine, rated at 580 horsepower, that makes the ZL1 the fastest, most capable Camaro ever, with performance credentials that include:

0-60 mph in four seconds

Top speed of 184 mph

11-second quarter-mile ETs (11.93 with the automatic / 11.96 with the manual transmission)

Lapped the Nürburgring in 7:41.27.

Guy Fieri’s Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition

The spiky-haired host of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” has an affinity for Chevy convertibles – he owns a 1968 and 2011 Camaro SS convertibles – and his new, personalized 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition makes Guy Fieri truly a fast food mogul.

The 427 Convertible Collector Edition blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models to create the fastest and most-capable convertible in Corvette’s history. Its heart is the 427-cubic-inch (7.0L) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm), it is the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible – and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only available with a six-speed manual transmission. It also features a dry-sump oiling system.

Fieri’s 427 Convertible is black with custom yellow stripes – a twist on the trademark yellow-and-black color scheme of his other Chevys. The car also features embroidered seat headrests and fender badges that call out the Guy Fieri Foundation. It rides on a quartet of black Cup wheels (19x10-inch front/20x12-inch rear) wrapped in Michelin PS2 tires.

It’s a high-performance Corvette befitting of its high-energy driver.

Chevrolet Performance 1967 Camaro Hot Wheels® concept

Forty-four years after its gleaming Spectraflame paint job, side-exit “zoomy” exhausts and red-line wheels launched playtime fantasies for millions of children of all ages, Chevrolet Performance has paid homage to the original Hot Wheels “Custom Camaro” toy with a full-scale tribute. It also introduces an all-new, emissions-compliant LS3 E-ROD Connect and Cruise crate powertrain system that matches the 430-horsepower LS3 engine with a 4L65-E four-speed automatic transmission.

Translating a 1:64-scale toy car into a 1:1 real car is complicated, as the proportions don’t exactly match a full-scale first-generation Camaro, but the designers interpreted the original toy in a way that conveys its spirit in a realistic form. The concept vehicle painted Kinetic Blue, just like the forthcoming Camaro Hot Wheels® Edition production model.

“A literal interpretation of the toy car would have been too cartoony – it just wouldn’t look right on a full-size car,” said Chevrolet Design Manager Dave Ross. “The stance and wheels of the concept vehicle are different, as well as some of the proportions the toy has, but the body lines and styling cues are all the same.”

Additional vehicle highlights include:

Shaved door handles with remote keyless entry

Hood that matches the design of the original Custom Camaro toy

Hot Wheels exterior badges and grille emblem

Stainless steel “zoomie” side-exit exhausts

Custom 18x9-inch (front) and 18x11-inch (rear) aluminum wheels with red-line accents

2012 Camaro front bucket seats with shortened head restraints, trimmed in white leather with blue accent stitching

Silver vinyl-wrapped instrument panel, door panels and rear inner quarter panels

Silver perforated headliner and sunshades

Custom instrument panel and console gauge kit

Leather-wrapped steering wheel.

In addition to the new LS3 E-ROD Connect and Cruise crate powertrain system, drivetrain and suspension components include a hydroformed front subframe with tubular control arms and adjustable coil-over shocks, a four-link rear suspension with adjustable coil-overs, rack-and-pinion steering and heavy-duty four-wheel disc brakes featuring six-piston calipers.

2013 Camaro Hot Wheels® Edition

The Camaro Hot Wheels® Edition will be produced in the first quarter of 2013, with an appearance that echoes the cues that Hot Wheels enthusiasts recognize, including a vibrant, graphics-accented metallic paint scheme and even red-lined wheels. It is available in coupe and convertible models – in 2LT (V-6) and 2SS (V-8) trims, blending exterior cues of the high-performance Camaro ZL1 with a Kinetic Blue exterior color and unique graphics. Exterior highlights include:

ZL1 rear spoiler (coupe models)

ZL1 front upper grille

Ground effects package, including front splitter and rocker treatment

Black 21-inch wheels with red outline stripe

Two-tone matte hood graphic and rear taillight panel “blackout” graphic

Fender “flame” graphics

Hot Wheels grille and decklid logos.

On the inside, a black leather-trimmed interior is accented with red and black seat stitching, with the Hot Wheels logo embroidered on the front seats. The instrument panel and door inserts are black, with the Hot Wheels-style flame decal on each door. Hot Wheels® Edition sill plates also distinguish the car, along with Camaro-logo premium floor mats with red edging.

Camaro ZL1 Touring Convertible concept

A concept that is easily duplicated, because it uses readily available accessories, this Camaro ZL1 convertible exemplifies how a few select components can create a one-of-a-kind cruiser. It wears a unique green exterior color and 10-spoke Chevrolet Accessories wheels with liquid metal finish and milled faces. Additional details include:

Windshield header frame, taillamp bezels and exterior badges with liquid metal finish

Matte black splitter and rockers

Matte black upper fascia blackout

Polished shock tower brace under the hood

Ebony leather seats with Mojave perforated leather inserts and light Mojave stitching

Camaro Performance V-8 concept

Showing what’s possible with new ZL1 driveline and 1LE suspension kits from Chevrolet Performance, this bad, black Camaro SS is transformed from an easy-going street driver to an SCCA Touring 2 weekend warrior. The Chevrolet Performance components include a Camaro ZL1 rear differential kit, 5.1-ratio short-throw shifter, shock tower brace with white Camaro graphic, Camaro 1LE suspension kit and a Camaro ZL1 brake conversion kit.

It also features a number of exterior appearance enhancements and ZL1-based interior components. Highlights include:

Camaro Performance V-6 concept

Developed in a similar vein to the racing-intended Camaro V-8 Performance Concept, this vision for a track-capable Camaro uses the 323-horsepower LFX V-6 engine for motivation. It also employs a blend of components available from Chevrolet Performance, such as the ZL1 Brake Conversion Kit and Camaro 1LE suspension kit, as well as the rear differential from the Camaro 1LE. Additional features on this Summit White concept Camaro include:
