Bob Lutz, in charge of product development at GM, said the new Camaro would cost about $200 more than the rival Ford Mustang, with a base price of $19,000, but will have more equipment.

He sees it as a high-volume car with sales of 120,000 to 150,000 a year. Mustang output is at around 190,000 units.

In keeping with the muscle-car theme, the Camaro is powered by a Corvette-derived 6-liter 400 horsepower V-8 teamed with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Ha, I agree. He sure does talk about the car a lot for it only being "a concept". Can you imagine if it didn't get built. I think everyone from this board would go stab him once.

The discussion on price got me thinking:
I wonder how many will chime into this thread and state, "I'm getting one!", yet are having issues affording/getting a loan on their less than $10,000 car now

I've been getting a feeling that everything on the car from a business and planning standpoint is already done, including price point of profitablity.

Like I said in another thread, GM needs to get the interior right. That simple design looks great on a half million dollar plus concept. It's going to look downright cheap and disgusting if they are going to use the approach Ford did with Mustang's cheap interior plastics (Mustang's interior is so overdesigned, Ford can get away with it).

I'm really curious as to how GM is going to do a car like the Camaro at 19K, unless they are banking on some seriously massive volume... more than Mustang's.

Looking at the interior pics of the concept, there are a few things I think we can say about it.

- The yellow/orange lighting won't make it into production
- The gauge cluster as it is, won't make it into production. Perhaps the placement, but not the appearance. As much as I do like it, I can't see it getting past an ergonomics focus group.
- The shifter and shifter console won't make it into production...there's too much polished metal. I think it looks great, but I can't see them spending that kind of money on it.
- Stitched leather dashboard will probably not make it either.
- Stitched leather seats will probably not make it.

However, with the above said, there's not much left for the interior for detail...meaning, that I see what appears to be a lot of plastic in there already...and it looks pretty good.

So here's my question: Can they replace the above items with lesser quality/cheaper parts and still look good? I think they can. The design is cool enough to be able to pull it off. It doesn't look like the interior of any other car. Even if it is made with cheaper materials, I think it will still have style - as opposed to Ford's Mustang interior. The Mustang interior could be any interior straight out of any compact/subcompact/sedan. There's nothing unique about it at all.

Realize that a "Chevy Coupe" has likely been in the long range product plan since before the end of F4 production. Naturally this has included at least preliminary ideas about platforms, production costs and profitability. A car like this (as opposed to some off-the-wall concept) doesn't usually get this far unless there's a good chance it will see production.

True, it is a great price for what you'll be getting. Still, to my original point, the base V6 price is double the price of what many 2001 ~ 2002 LS1 4th gens are fetching now. $20,000 is around 4 ~ 5 (+) times what an most LT1, and 3rd gens are seeing.
