As we just learned in our Deep Dive of the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, Chevy built this car with the track-focused Porsche 911 GT3 and Nissan GT-R owners in mind, but that doesn't mean the Camaro-Mustang rivalry is dead. Using the same Z/28 that just set a 7:37 lap time at the Nürburgring, Chevy brought the hi-po coupe back to its super-secret, Milford Road Course to put it head-to-head against what it considers the ultimate track-ready Mustang, the Boss 302 Laguna Seca - and it was all caught on video.

While the Shelby GT500 is obviously a more powerful Mustang than the now-deceased Boss, Chevy found that the Boss 302 Laguna Seca actually performed better around the 2.9-mile MRC track. As Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser tells it, the Z/28's carbon ceramic brakes allows for deeper, faster corner entry, while the wider, stickier tires gives the car better peak lateral Gs. That still doesn't even factor in the F1-type dynamic damper system or the 505-horsepower, 7.0-liter V8 under the hood.

Awesome stuff.

This isn't the Z/28, but there is a "versus" video on youtube featuring the ZL1 against the Boss 302. Pretty good stuff as well.

Ford has their work cutout for them in their upcoming Mustang redesign. All comments from every review and head to head matchup I've seen basically say the Mustang feels older and just fades as the race goes on. The Camaro, particularly its braking, is always there and will be there lap after lap.

Gotta love it.

Who is the first opponent of the new 2014 Camaro Z/28? It’s the Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca. Chevrolet most recently matched the two against each other in a race around MRC (Milford Race Coarse) on the GM Proving Grounds. Why not the Top Dawg Mustang GT500? As Al Oppenheiser, Chief Engineer for Camaro said, the the Boss 302 Laguna Seca actually performed better around MRC. Chevrolet isn’t just running their mouth like a troll behind a keyboard on an Automotive Internet Message Forum – they have the video to back it up.

Great video but lets be realistic here. . . The Boss is/was less expensive ($49K vs. $75K?) and has the creature comforts for being a daily driver (i.e. air and radio).

Yes, but it's the only Mustang Ford has that can try and compete at the track. Even the 1LE Camaro which is probably $10K cheaper than the Boss 203 Laguna Seca beats it.

Chris, I think a truer comparison would be the Z/28 vs. my 2010 Versa. I think GM should transport me and my Versa for a head to head track comparison. And yes, they should let me take the Z/28 around the track a few times as well!

I'm not sure what the need is to be "realistic." This video is not about which car is the best value, which costs less, or which car is the best day to day driver. It's a straight up race comparison to see which is the best car. That's all it is. Plain and simple.
